Systematic packaging development

Why waste your money? Too much packaging results in waste an unnecessary cost and too little packaging results in damaged products, which in a worst-case scenario results in replacement costs and unhappy customers. An optimized packaged-product that takes advantages of a robust product design is the desired solution. Learn how to use Systematic packaging development in 6 steps to reach an optimum solution that takes into account the weaknesses of the product, the hazards of the distribution environment and the characteristics of the packaging materials.

Speakers
Anna Broodh, Senior Packaging consultant and Jesper Berthold, Director Packaging development & Product testing.
Anna Broodh have almost 20 years of experience from papermaking and the value chain from paper to finished packaging. Jesper Berthold, back at RISE Bio-economy (Innventia) after 20 years in various positions inside and outside the pulp and paper industry mainly in Scandinavia, is trying to widen the involvement of all the different players along the packaging value cycle in an attempt to find future, much more sustainable, packaging solutions.

Tuesday 23 October, 14:00-15:00
Systematic modifications in surface chemistry and/or topography in packaging are often made to improve various properties of the package, e.g. printability, inter-laminate adhesion and barrier properties, etc. Such modifications can also be made on the outside of the package to deliver a desirable perceptual response to the consumer’s hand, which may affect the willingness to purchase the product. In this talk, we will present possible ways to modify surfaces as well as how to study the effect of surface properties on tactile perception.

Speakers
Kenth Johansson, Lic. Eng, Lisa Skedung, PhD.
Kenth Johansson at RISE Bioscience and Materials is an expert on surface modification and plasma modifications in particular, development of functional surfaces for many different applications, and surface analysis. Lisa Skedung at RISE Bioscience and Materials is an expert in perception delivery, i.e. how to control and communicate the tactile signature of materials and products. The research includes linking quantified perceptual responses with measured surface properties obtained on the same stimuli (psychophysics) as well as the corresponding interaction forces with the human skin (bio-tribology).

Fiber based packaging materials are on a move
Driven by the increasing awareness that plastics is not always the answer, molded pulp are back with anything from complicated hybrid bottles to new inventive trays while corrugated board/cartons see renewed growth. In this talk emerging challenges, recent trends and the development of next generation of fiber-based packaging will be presented.

Speakers
Jesper Berthold and Fredrik Berthold.
Fredrik Berthold holds a PhD in Wood Chemistry and has been active in Pulp and Paper research for about 30 years. The last 15 years Fredrik has focused his work on the development of new bio-based material solutions. Key interests are e.g.: interaction between cellulose and other materials, modification of cellulose and product driven research.

Integrated electronics in packaging

Imagine a packaging material that senses it´s surroundings and communicates with the outside world. We are exploring what possibilities the integration of active materials inside a paper can open. Here, we will discuss both how to add the active materials in the papermaking process and future applications.

Speakers
Hjalmar Granberg and Karl Håkansson, PhD.
Dr. Granberg is researching the integration of active materials into new biobased from the forest. Dr. Håkansson has a background in fluid physics, focusing on fiber-based manufacturing processes both on macro and nano-scale.

Does it makes sense? Insights from consumer studies
Why does a surface feel pleasant to touch, and how is this connected to design and choice of materials? What constitutes good print quality, and what disrupts our impressions? How is packaging handled, and what problems do users encounter? We study how people see, feel, perceive and interact with packaging, graphic products, new materials. Based on the various functions of packaging, we present insights from different research studies. Learn how consumers experience and evaluate packaging, products and (new) material, and how attention and visual processing affect decision-making

Speakers
Siv Lindberg, Senior Research Associate and Annika Lindström, Research Associate.
Both Dr Lindberg and Lindström have a background in psychology and specializes in human perception and usability. Their focus lays in in the perceptual determinants of product appearance and the relative importance of the senses in product evaluation.

Requirements and legislation of Food Contact Materials (FCM)

What kind of requirements do a package intended for food contact need to fulfil before it is released into the market? What kind of information and knowledge are necessary to have in order to be able to ensure safety of a packaging? In this talk, we will present the current requirements and legislation, discuss the recent development and the challenges within FCM.

Speakers
Hans Steijer, Project Manager of industry Group Normpack, Kai-Yee Thim, Director, Product Safety.
Hans Steijer
has more than 10 years of experience of working with challenges of securing products for release to public. He is today part of the industry group in Normpack as an expert within requirements and legislation of food contact materials. Kai-Yee Thim has worked with chemical analyses, requirements and legislation of food contact materials for more than 15 years.
