Packaging plays a crucial part in sustainability, by being protective and durable, making transports lighter while using as little material as possible. Still, the packaging system we have built for ourselves is not working. We have as an industry, with all our innovative spirit and ability to solve problems, created a dilemma. On the one hand, we have created materials capable of solving almost any packaging challenge. On the other hand, the versatility and complexity of many of these packaging materials make them near-impossible to keep circulating within the current packaging system. This presentation will give impartial evidence of just how far we can get with current packaging innovations and recycling technologies and elucidate what is still missing and what we need to do to close the gap towards true packaging circularity. A number of emerging technologies will also be reviewed, with potential to close the circularity gap and how they can support the industry moving forward.
